Currency

/ˈkʌrənsi/ or /ˈkɜːrənsi/ noun

Definition

Currency is the system of money in general use in a country, such as coins, banknotes, or digital money. It can also mean something that is widely accepted or used at a particular time.

Etymology

From Latin *currens* “running,” from *currere* “to run,” through a sense of things that are in circulation or ‘running’ through society. It first referred to things in active use, then more specifically to money.

Kelly Says

Money is called ‘currency’ because it flows—moving from hand to hand like a current in a river. Ideas and trends also have currency when they ‘circulate’ widely, which is why we say a rumor or belief ‘has no currency anymore.’
