Definition
An archaic term for a type of short or curtailed lace, or possibly a shortened laced weapon/shield covering.
Etymology
Combining curtal (short) with lace (from Old French las, meaning 'noose' or 'snare,' from Latin laqueus). The exact historical referent is unclear, but likely describes abbreviated lacing.
Kelly Says
Medieval armor terminology is wonderfully confusing—curtelace might describe the reduced lacing on armor for horses (which needed less protection than their riders), but the term appears so rarely we're not entirely sure!
