Cyanic

/saɪˈæn.ɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to or derived from cyanogen, a highly toxic compound consisting of carbon and nitrogen, or containing cyanide groups.

Etymology

From cyano- (from Greek kyanos, dark blue) + -ic (adjective suffix). The prefix cyano- originally referred to the blue color of Prussian blue pigment, but came to mean cyanide compounds.

Kelly Says

The word 'cyanic' reveals how chemistry naming works—scientists named cyanide compounds after the blue color they created, but the actual elements are colorless; they were just following the pigment's hue rather than the truth of the molecule.
