Definition
Written in or converted to cipher; encoded with a secret code or numerical system.
Etymology
From 'cipher' (from Arabic 'sifr' meaning zero/empty), past tense. The shift from noun to verb to adjective shows how code-breaking has been human and linguistic for centuries.
Kelly Says
The word 'cipher' literally meant 'zero' in Arabic—but zero was so revolutionary that European traders adopted the whole word, and soon 'cipher' meant secret codes, because zero's notation itself seemed mysterious to non-mathematicians!
