The directed movement or arrangement of cells in response to external physical or chemical stimuli.
Etymology
From cyto- (Greek kytos, 'cell') + -taxis (Greek taxis, 'arrangement' or 'order'). This biological term was coined to describe cellular movements observed under microscopes.
