Dabuh

/ˈdæbuː/ noun

Definition

A large African antelope with a stocky build, known for living in savannas and grasslands.

Etymology

From Arabic 'dābu' or Swahili origins, this word refers to what is also called a hartebeest. The term traveled through African languages and into English as naturalists and explorers documented African wildlife.

Kelly Says

The dabuh is one of those animal names that shows how English borrowed heavily from African languages when Europeans first encountered unfamiliar creatures—the word itself is older than most written English descriptions of the animal.
