Decimal

/ˈdɛsɪməl/ adjective

Definition

Decimal relates to the number system based on ten, and often refers to numbers written with a point to show parts of a whole, like 3.14.

Etymology

It comes from Medieval Latin “decimalis,” from Latin “decimus,” meaning “tenth,” from “decem,” “ten.” The decimal system is literally a “ten-based” system.

Kelly Says

Our whole number system is secretly decimal—we rarely notice because it feels so natural. That’s just because humans have ten fingers; if we’d evolved with eight, math class would have looked very different.
