Definition
The illegal taking of money or property by someone whose job it is to manage it; embezzlement or misappropriation.
Etymology
From Medieval Latin 'defalcatio', combining 'de-' (away from) and 'falcare' (to cut). The noun form emerged in English legal language around the 16th century to describe the crime itself rather than just the act.
Kelly Says
Corporate auditors have entire departments dedicated to detecting defalcation, and famous cases like Bernie Madoff's massive scheme show how the word applies whether it's $100 or $65 billion—the principle is the same, just the scale differs.
