Defenestrate

/diˈfɛnəˌstreɪt/ verb

Definition

To throw someone or something out of a window. Can also mean to dismiss someone from a position of authority.

Etymology

From Latin 'de' (from) and 'fenestra' (window). The word was coined in reference to the Defenestration of Prague (1618), when Protestant officials were thrown from a castle window, sparking the Thirty Years' War.

Kelly Says

Remember 'fenestra' = window (like 'fenestration' in architecture). The Defenestration of Prague literally started a war by throwing people out windows - talk about dramatic consequences!
