Deimos

/ˈdeɪ.məs/ noun

Definition

In Greek mythology, the personification of panic, dread, or fear; one of the sons of Ares and Aphrodite.

Etymology

From ancient Greek 'δεῖμος' (deimos, fear or dread). In mythology, Deimos and Phobos were two spirits that accompanied Ares in battle. NASA named Mars's smaller moon Deimos after this figure in 1877.

Kelly Says

Scientists named one of Mars's moons after the Greek god of panic—what's mind-bending is that they had to predict its existence mathematically before actually seeing it, so it's the only celestial body named for something theorized before discovery.
