Democritean

/ˌdɛməkrɪˈtiːən/ adjective

Definition

Relating to Democritus, an ancient Greek philosopher, or his theories about atoms and the nature of matter.

Etymology

From Democritus (c. 460-370 BCE), Greek philosopher + -ean (relating to). Democritus proposed that all matter consists of indivisible particles called atomos (uncuttable).

Kelly Says

Democritean philosophy posited atoms 2,400 years before we could see them—and amazingly, he was basically right about their existence! He achieved this through pure logical thinking without any experiments, which is wild for the history of science.
