Denomination

/dɪˌnɒmɪˈneɪʃən/ (UK), /dɪˌnɑːmɪˈneɪʃən/ (US) noun

Definition

A group within a larger religion that has its own name, organization, and slightly different beliefs. It can also mean the value of a coin, bill, or stamp, such as five dollars or ten euros.

Etymology

From Latin *denominatio* meaning 'a naming', from *de-* ('completely') and *nomen* ('name'). It originally referred simply to giving something a specific name or category.

Kelly Says

Whether it’s money or religion, denomination is about labeling: this group, this value, this name. That’s why a five-dollar bill and a Protestant church can both be called denominations—they’re both officially named units within a larger system.
