Dermis

/ˈdɜːmɪs/ noun

Definition

The thick inner layer of skin beneath the epidermis, containing blood vessels, nerve endings, hair follicles, and connective tissue made mostly of collagen.

Etymology

From Greek 'derma' (skin). This anatomical term has been used since ancient times but became standardized in modern medical terminology during the Renaissance.

Kelly Says

The dermis is where all the interesting skin stuff happens—it's packed with collagen, which is why it's where dermatologists inject fillers to smooth wrinkles, and why sun damage to the dermis causes permanent aging.
