Devitrify

/diːˈvɪtrɪfaɪ/ verb

Definition

To convert glass from an amorphous (glassy) state into a crystalline state, causing it to become opaque and brittle.

Etymology

From de- (reversal) + vitrify (to make glass). The opposite of vitrification in the glass-making process.

Kelly Says

This is the enemy of glass-makers—while they're desperately trying to create perfect glass, impurities and slow cooling cause devitrification, which ruins the final product by making it cloudy and weak.
