A cephalopod mollusk, such as a squid or octopus, that has two gills instead of the four found in other cephalopods.
Etymology
From di- (two) + branch, from Latin branchia (gill). The term evolved in 19th-century zoology to classify cephalopods based on their gill count, distinguishing them from more primitive four-gilled forms.
