Etymology
From prefix dis- (opposite of) + compliance (from Latin com- 'with' + plere 'to fill'). The word developed in English to describe active refusal rather than mere passive non-compliance.

This word is a legal and formal favorite, but it's rarer than you'd expect—most people just say 'non-compliance.' The 'dis-' prefix often adds a sense of active resistance rather than just absence, which is why discompliance sounds more rebellious than non-compliance.
