Definition
The process of purifying a liquid by heating it into vapor and then cooling it back into liquid form, which separates unwanted substances.
Etymology
Present participle of distill, from Latin distillare. The process literally means 'to drip apart,' as impure liquid drips away from desired liquid.

The oldest known distillation was done by ancient Egyptians around 3000 BCE to make perfumes, and the word 'perfume' literally means 'through smoke' because of the heating involved!
