Doab

/doʊˈɑb/ noun

Definition

In South Asia, especially India, a region of fertile land between two rivers, particularly referring to the area between the Tigris and Euphrates or between other major river systems.

Etymology

From Persian 'do' (two) plus 'ab' (water), literally meaning 'two waters.' The term was used by ancient Persian and Islamic geographers to describe these highly fertile regions where rivers provided natural irrigation.

Kelly Says

Doabs are some of the most agriculturally productive regions in the world because two rivers mean double the water, double the nutrients, and double the flood cycles—the Punjab doab between the Sutlej and Ravi rivers has fed billions of people for millennia!
