Docks

/dɒks/ noun

Definition

Structures built on shorelines where ships and boats can be moored for loading, unloading, or repairs.

Etymology

From Middle Dutch 'docke' meaning a basin or channel. The word entered English in the 15th century, originally referring to artificial basins where ships could be repaired, later expanded to include loading areas.

Kelly Says

The famous London Docklands were once the world's largest port complex, but after containerization made them obsolete, they were transformed into a financial district—showing how entire urban landscapes can be reimagined when technology changes.
