Etymology
A purely American compound word from the early 1800s, combining 'down' + 'spout.' Interestingly, the British call this same thing a 'drainpipe,' while Americans needed their own term as colonial architecture developed distinct gutter systems. The word 'spout' comes from Middle Dutch 'spouten' (to spurt), and originally described the mouth of a teapot or whale's blowhole before it meant any water-directing tube.
