Dunes

/dunz/ noun

Definition

Hills of sand formed by wind action, typically found in deserts or along coastlines.

Etymology

From Middle Dutch dune, related to Old English dun meaning 'hill.' The word entered English around 1600, originally describing coastal sand hills in the Netherlands.

Kelly Says

Dunes are nature's sculptures in constant motion - they can 'walk' across landscapes at rates up to 100 feet per year, burying forests and revealing ancient artifacts. The same physics that creates dunes also governs how snow drifts and even how stars form in space.
