Topography

/təˈpɒɡrəfi/ noun

Definition

The detailed description or representation of the physical features of an area, including its elevation, terrain, and natural landmarks. It also refers to the arrangement of these features themselves.

Etymology

From Greek topos (place) + graphein (to write), literally meaning 'place writing' or 'description of places.' The word entered English in the 15th century via Medieval Latin topographia. Originally used for written descriptions of locations, it evolved to include the mathematical mapping and measurement of terrain.

Kelly Says

Topography is literally 'place writing' — the art of writing about landscapes! Just as biography writes about lives and geography writes about the entire Earth, topography focuses on the intimate details of specific places. Maps are essentially topographical writing, translating three-dimensional reality into two-dimensional symbols we can read.
