Definition
Plural of dyestuff; various substances or materials used as dyes for coloring textiles and other items.
Etymology
From dyestuff plus -s (plural), referring collectively to the range of available dyes. The term became standard in chemistry and textile engineering to refer to inventories and categories of dye materials.
Kelly Says
When the synthetic dye industry exploded in the late 1800s, companies would catalog hundreds of different dyestuffs—each with specific colors, properties, and prices—and chemists would mix and match them to create new shades.
