Ecclesiology

/ɪˌkliziˈɒlədʒi/ noun

Definition

The theological study of the church, including its nature, purpose, structure, and mission. Ecclesiology examines how religious communities organize themselves and understand their role in the world.

Etymology

From Greek 'ekklesia' (assembly, church) + 'logos' (study). The term developed as Christian communities needed to understand their identity and structure distinct from Judaism and Greco-Roman institutions.

Kelly Says

Ecclesiology explains why there are thousands of Christian denominations despite following the same Jesus! From Catholic papal authority to Baptist congregational independence, different theories about church governance have literally divided and multiplied Christianity throughout history.
