Definition
Plural of ecotone; transition zones between two different ecosystems where different species mix and interact.
Etymology
From 'eco-' (environment) plus Greek 'tonos' (tension, boundary). Ecologists recognized these zones were uniquely important and worthy of specific study in the early 1900s.
Kelly Says
Wetlands are ecotones between land and water, coral reefs are ecotones between ocean and land, and they're surprisingly productive—more species live in these 'in-between' spaces than in the main ecosystems themselves.
