Eland

/ˈiːland/ noun

Definition

A large African antelope with a tan or grayish coat, thick neck, and long horns, related to the kudu.

Etymology

From Dutch eland, from a Bantu or East African language source. Dutch settlers in Africa encountered the animal and borrowed the local name, which entered English through colonial contact.

Kelly Says

Elands are the largest antelopes on Earth—some weigh as much as a moose—yet most people have never heard of them because they live in remote African savannas far from human tourists!
