Definition
A mechanical drawing instrument or device used to construct precise ellipses by hand.
Etymology
From 'ellipse' plus '-graph' (from Greek 'graphein,' to write or draw). Invented in the 19th century as engineers and draftsmen needed tools to draw perfect ellipses.
Kelly Says
An ellipsograph is a gorgeous piece of engineering—before computers, draftsmen used these mechanical devices with spinning arms and pivots to draw perfect ellipses, and watching one work is hypnotic mechanical art!
