Compass

/ˈkʌmpəs/ noun

Definition

A compass is a tool with a magnetic needle that points toward the Earth’s north, used for finding direction. It can also mean the range or limits of something, like someone’s emotional or moral compass.

Etymology

From Old French *compas* “circle, measure,” from Late Latin *compassare* “to pace out,” from *com-* “together” + *passus* “step.” The navigation tool got its name from its circular shape and role in measuring direction.

Kelly Says

We talk about a ‘moral compass’ because, like the physical tool, it helps you orient yourself when you’re not sure which way to go. Interestingly, an actual compass doesn’t point to true north, just magnetic north—your inner compass can be slightly ‘off’ too and still be very useful.
