Emigration

/ˌɛmɪˈɡreɪʃən/ noun

Definition

The act of leaving one's country or region to settle permanently in another. The process of moving away from one's homeland.

Etymology

From Latin 'emigrare' - 'e' (out) + 'migrare' (to move). First used in English in the 1640s, distinguishing outward movement from immigration (inward movement).

Kelly Says

Emigration and immigration are two sides of the same coin - you emigrate FROM somewhere and immigrate TO somewhere else. The 'e' prefix (meaning 'out') makes all the difference in perspective and policy discussions.
