Definition
Gives someone a job and pays them to do work, or uses something as a tool or method to accomplish something.
Etymology
From Old French 'emploi' meaning 'use' or 'application' (em- + ploi from Latin 'plicare' meaning 'to fold'). The word shifted from meaning 'to use' to specifically mean 'to hire someone for work'.
Kelly Says
The word 'employ' literally comes from folding—like you're 'folding in' a person's labor—and it's related to 'complicate,' 'accomplish,' and 'duplicate,' all from the idea of folding something together!
