Definition
Relating to or designed for display, exhibition, or ceremonial rhetoric meant to praise or blame rather than persuade to action.
Etymology
From Greek 'epideiktikos' (displaying, demonstrative) from 'epi' (upon) + 'deknynai' (to show). Aristotle used this term to classify one of the three branches of rhetoric.
Kelly Says
Aristotle classified rhetoric into three types, and epideictic rhetoric is basically the 'showing off' kind—like when you give a speech praising someone at an awards ceremony, you're being epidictic!
