Definition
Epilepsy; a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
Etymology
From Greek 'epilepsia,' derived from 'epilambanein' (to seize, to take possession of), referring to how the condition suddenly 'seizes' the person. Used especially in medical and scientific contexts.
Kelly Says
The Greek word literally means 'to take possession of'—ancient Greeks and Romans thought epilepsy was actually a divine possession or sacred disease, which is why they were both terrified of and reverent toward people with epilepsy, a stigma that took centuries to overcome.
