Definition
The omentum, a fold of tissue containing blood vessels and fat that hangs from the stomach and covers the abdominal organs.
Etymology
From Greek 'epiploon' (literally 'on the whole,' referring to a membrane spread over organs), from 'epi' (upon) + 'ploon' (to sail or spread).
Kelly Says
The omentum was called the 'policeman of the abdomen' because it constantly patrols and contains infections—it wraps around injured organs like a protective blanket.
