Ergodicity

/ˌɜrɡoʊˈdɪsɪti/ noun

Definition

In physics and statistics, the property that a system's average behavior over time equals its average behavior across all possible states at one moment.

Etymology

From Greek 'ergon' (work) and 'hodos' (path), coined in 1884 by physicist Ludwig Boltzmann to describe thermodynamic systems.

Kelly Says

Ergodicity is wild—it says that if you watch a gas molecule bounce around forever, you'll eventually see it in every possible position and speed, making the long-term average equal the average of all possibilities right now.
