Fernweh

/ˈfɛʁnveː/ noun

Definition

An ache for distant places; a craving for travel to lands unseen. The opposite of homesickness.

Etymology

From German 'fern' (far) + 'Weh' (pain/woe). Where 'Heimweh' is homesickness, 'Fernweh' is farsickness — the pain of not being somewhere else.

Germans have a word for wanting to be ANYWHERE but here — not because here is bad, but because THERE is calling! Your wanderlust has a fancy German name now! ✈️
