Definition
Past tense of fib; told a small lie or unimportant falsehood about something minor.
Etymology
From 'fib,' which originated as a 17th-century term possibly from 'fable' or as a childish alteration of 'lie,' referring specifically to small, harmless untruths.
Kelly Says
Fib is basically society's way of saying 'some lies are okay'—when someone fibs about how they lost weight or didn't eat the cookies, we treat it as cute rather than dishonest. English has different words for different moral weights of lying.
