Definition
The unique pattern of ridges and lines on the tip of a human finger; any distinctive identifying characteristic.
Etymology
Compound word combining 'finger' from Old English 'finger' and 'print' from Old French 'preinte' meaning 'impression.' The term emerged in the late 19th century when Francis Galton systematized the use of fingerprints for identification.
Kelly Says
No two people have ever been found to have identical fingerprints, not even identical twins, making them one of nature's most reliable identification systems. The probability of two people sharing the same fingerprint is estimated at less than one in 64 billion, which is why they remain the gold standard in forensic identification despite advances in DNA analysis.
