Flathead

/ˈflætˌhɛd/ noun

Definition

A member of certain Native American tribes, or a stupid person in slang; also a type of fish with a broad flat head.

Etymology

From English 'flat' + 'head', referring to the literal shape of the head. The term for Native Americans originally described cranial practices of some tribes that modified head shape. It became a general derogatory term and also applies to flathead fish and catfish species.

Kelly Says

Surprisingly, some Native American tribes practiced intentional head flattening as a cultural practice, similar to traditions in other parts of the world—it wasn't natural but was considered beautiful at the time, showing how different cultures have very different beauty standards!
