Flemish

/ˈflɛmɪʃ/ adjective

Definition

Relating to Flanders, its people, or their language. Also refers to a distinctive style of painting that developed in the Low Countries during the Renaissance, characterized by detailed realism and oil painting techniques.

Etymology

From Middle Dutch 'Vlāmisch', referring to the people of Flanders (modern-day Belgium and parts of France and Netherlands). The term evolved through Old French 'flamenc' before entering English in the 14th century.

Kelly Says

Flemish painters like Jan van Eyck pioneered oil painting techniques that were so advanced they were considered almost magical by contemporaries. Their ability to capture minute details like individual hairs and fabric textures influenced all of European art for centuries.
