Floors

/flɔrz/ noun

Definition

The bottom surfaces of rooms or buildings on which people walk. Different levels or stories of a building.

Etymology

From Old English 'flor' meaning ground or pavement, related to Old Norse 'flor' and German 'Flur.' The sense of building levels developed in Middle English as multi-story construction became more common.

Kelly Says

The expression 'the floor is yours' comes from parliamentary procedure where speakers literally stood on the chamber floor to address the assembly. Ocean floors contain more historical artifacts than all the world's museums combined, making the deep sea the largest museum on Earth.
