Definition
Struggling awkwardly or having difficulty; thrashing around without making progress.
Etymology
From Dutch 'flounder' or 'floundr' (a type of flatfish), possibly influenced by the fish's characteristic flopping movements on land. Later applied metaphorically to any clumsy struggling.
Kelly Says
Interestingly, 'flounder' has two meanings that come from different origins—the fish (from Dutch) and the struggling motion (possibly influenced by the fish's helpless flopping), so the word literally embodies the image of a fish out of water.
