Definition
A person who strangles someone with a garrote or wire device, often a criminal who attacks victims.
Etymology
From garrote + -er (agent suffix). English adopted this term from Spanish in the 16th-17th centuries to describe someone who commits garroting attacks.
Kelly Says
In 19th-century cities, garoters became so notorious that newspapers sensationalized their crimes—the word itself sparked urban panic and became the boogeyman of street crime before modern policing.
