Definition
The taxonomic class of mollusks that includes snails, slugs, and sea slugs; the plural or group name for gasteropods.
Etymology
Latin plural/group form of 'gasteropod,' using the Latin nominative plural '-a.' Created in 19th-century zoological taxonomy to classify an entire group of belly-footed mollusks.
Kelly Says
When Linnaeus was building the classification system, he named entire groups based on obvious physical features—gasteropods got named for their belly-foot because that's literally the first thing you notice when you watch a snail move, and that simple observation created a category with thousands of modern species.
