Gazette

/ɡəˈzɛt/ noun

Definition

A newspaper or official journal, often used in the names of news publications.

Etymology

From French *gazette*, from Italian *gazzetta*, originally the name of a small Venetian coin. That coin was the price of a news sheet, so the coin’s name became the name of the paper itself. Over time it came to mean any newspaper or official bulletin.

Kelly Says

Imagine calling your newspaper “The Quarter” because that’s what it costs — that’s how *gazette* began. A tiny coin’s name jumped from money to media. It’s a reminder that sometimes the price tag becomes the brand.
