Geodesic

/ˌdʒiːoʊˈdɛsɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to the shortest path between two points on a curved surface, in architecture describing dome structures made of triangular elements that follow these optimal geometric paths. Geodesic domes distribute structural loads efficiently through their triangulated geometry.

Etymology

From Greek 'geodaisia' (land division), originally a surveying term for measuring earth's surface. Buckminster Fuller popularized the architectural application in the 1940s, coining 'geodesic dome' for his revolutionary spherical structures.

Kelly Says

Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes were inspired by his observation that nature builds with maximum strength using minimum material - the same principle behind soap bubbles and virus structures! His 1967 Montreal Expo dome used only 1/30th the structural material of a conventional building of the same size.
