Gliosis

/ɡlaɪˈoʊsɪs/ noun

Definition

A condition where star-shaped brain cells called glial cells multiply and create scar tissue in the brain or spinal cord, often as a response to injury or disease.

Etymology

From Greek 'glia' (glue) + '-osis' (condition or disease). The term emerged in neurology in the early 20th century to describe the proliferation of glial cells, which were named for their supposed gluing function in the nervous system.

Kelly Says

Your brain has support cells that act like emergency responders—when you get a concussion or stroke, these glial cells swarm in to protect and clean up, but if they go overboard, they form scar tissue called gliosis that can actually interfere with nerve signals!
