Godetia

/ɡoʊˈdiːʃə/ noun

Definition

A genus of colorful flowering plants with delicate, satiny flowers, native to western North America and commonly grown in gardens.

Etymology

Named in 1820 by botanist Carl Ludwig Willdenow after Swiss botanist and zoologist Charles Godet (1797-1879). The -ia suffix is typical of Linnaean botanical nomenclature for genus names.

Kelly Says

Godetias were beloved Victorian garden flowers, and they got their name 100+ years after Godet died—it's one of those botanical naming patterns where scientists honor fellow naturalists by attaching their names to beautiful things.
