Gorilla

/ɡəˈrɪlə/ noun

Definition

A gorilla is a large, strong ape that lives in African forests and walks on its knuckles. Gorillas are mostly gentle plant-eaters that live in family groups.

Etymology

“Gorilla” comes from Modern Latin, based on a Greek word “gorillai” used in an ancient story about ‘hairy women’ on the African coast. Later explorers applied the term to the great apes they encountered.

Kelly Says

Even though gorillas look fierce, they’re usually shy and peaceful, and they share about 98% of their DNA with humans. Their chest-beating is often more like loud communication than a constant threat.
