To gravitate toward something means to be naturally drawn or attracted to it. In science, it can also mean to move toward another object because of gravity.
“Gravitate” comes from Modern Latin “gravitare,” meaning to weigh down, from “gravitas,” heaviness. It was first used in physics and later took on a more general sense of attraction.
We talk about gravitating toward people or hobbies as if they had their own gravity. The metaphor works because your interests and friends really do ‘pull’ your attention and time in certain directions.
