Definition
Buildings with glass or transparent walls and roofs where plants are grown in controlled temperature and light conditions.
Etymology
From 'green' (plants) and 'house' (building). The modern greenhouse emerged in the 1600s as wealthy Europeans wanted to grow exotic tropical plants in cold climates, using glass technology that was increasingly available.
Kelly Says
Greenhouses were status symbols for rich Victorians—the larger and more elaborate your greenhouse, the more wealth and power you had, because tropical plants and glass were incredibly expensive!
